EU-Flagship-Project
industrialising a plastic-free packaging alternative
BIOWRAP is scaling up a industrial production line for 100% paper-based bubble wrap,
which is compostable and fully recyclable in standard paper streams.
About BIOWRAP
BIOWRAP is a flagship project of CBE JU (Circular Bio-based Europe), funded under Horizon Europe. Under the leadership of Papair, an international consortium from industry and research is developing the industrial-scale production of a sustainable packaging alternative. The consortium members map out the entire value chain, from alternative raw materials to consumer research.
The Objective
Construction of a TRL-8 facility for PapairWrap, the patented alternative to plastic bubble wrap that delivers 1.6× better product protection at the same price.
At the right time
Regulatory requirements such as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) are making recyclable alternatives mandatory, and companies are setting themselves ambitious sustainability targets. BIOWRAP develops industrially viable, sustainable solutions to meet this demand.
